Coffee is required for many of us first thing in the morning. During this time of the year, when the weather gets colder and the days get shorter, we drink more coffee than usual.
Lots of people suffer with a condition known as Seasonal Affective Disorder, usually referred to as SAD. This is when the lack of light and warmth can have a negative impact on your mental state.
In this article, Café Casa will dissect a recent study funded by the Institute for Scientific Information on Coffee. This outlines why drinking coffee in the winter months could help improve your mood.
Drink more coffee for warmth.
Feeling cold is one of the main reasons why a lot of people dislike the winter. It can certainly lead to poor mood and feeling low.
A cup of coffee is a moment of bliss that makes us feel warmer, but probably not in the way that you think. Indeed, it isn’t the beverage itself that makes us feel warmer, it’s the effects of the caffeine providing us with energy.
If it’s making us feel warmer, though, who really cares?

Drink more coffee for concentration.
If we don’t feel motivated or productive, this can sometimes lead to a slump that is hard to reverse.
From the above study, nearly a quarter of respondents agreed that the winter months make it harder to concentrate. This is probably owing to the colder weather and darker days.
If you drink more coffee, then you will feel more productive. Sure enough, 21% of respondents said this was why they drank coffee.

Drink more coffee for reaction times.
If you work in a labour-intensive role, then the study also uncovered coffee-based insights that are more relevant to you.
Poor mental health can affect reaction times and not just because of tiredness and lack of energy. Scientists from the study found that coffee can act as a brain stimulant, which helps keep you alert.
20% of the respondents agreed.

One final point to note from the report is the positive psychological effects when you drink more coffee. Because we expect a cup of coffee to make us feel better, even the smell of it can vastly improve our mood.
