A study has found that 51.4% of people are drinking more coffee at home, in the wake of today’s hybrid working world. Thanks to having more control over when to break from work, employees are engaging more in the traditional coffee break in the comfort of their domestic environment.
Modern attitudes towards the coffee break.
The study was distributed to 140 employees, a number that would strongly resonate to a small to medium sized organisation.
111 (51.4%) said they have consumed more coffee whilst working from home, a figure that can be broken down into the following additional statistics:
- 20% of these said they were drinking an extra one cup a day.
- 22% said they were enjoying two more cups a day.
- 10% said they were having an extra three cups a day.
- 4% said they were relaxing over as many as four more cups a day!
Just 13.4%, or 29 people, said they were making less cups of coffee drunk per day than before they started working from home.
Sticking with the trusted coffee break.
The coffee break has long been a staple of the working day. And it shows no sign of slowing down just because employees are now operating more from their homes instead of the traditional workplace.
A wide range of studies prove that a coffee break can support good health, both physically and mentally. A coffee break is a valuable opportunity to de-stress and relax, which is totally relevant regardless of where you’re working.
Of the 51.4% of people who said they consumed more coffee at home, they cited the following reasons as to the reason why:
- 69 people (or 62.2%) said it was simply to take a break from work.
- 32 people (or 28.8%) said coffee breaks helped with stress.
- 30 people (or 27%) said they used the coffee break to recharge and find motivation for the rest of the day.
Domestic environments are designed to promote comfort and relaxation, two characteristics that the coffee break is known to provide. Perhaps it is the rise in home coffee machines that makes enjoying great coffee at home even more appealing, and why consumers don’t want to head out to the high street.
Working from home also gives employees more flexibility on when they choose to take a coffee break. It is more within our own control.
Is the coffee shop losing its love?
Another interesting trend to emerge from the rise in home coffee consumption, is the negative impact this is also having on the high street coffee shops.
Over the past few years, we have seen these establishments have to conform to fresh demand. Consumers have wanted more choice and more of a personal touch when they visit, as well as more insight into the history of their coffee and the story behind it.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to be enough.
From the original study, respondents said they are averaging two fewer takeaway coffees a week, a move that is saving them around £10 every week.
