It’s fair to say that coffee doesn’t always grab positive headlines when it comes to sustainability. Through our ethical approach to our products, Café Casa has long played its part in turning the reputation around.
And now, along with our vending machine division Coinadrink Limited, we are driving a sustainable future quicker than before. We have partnered with two external organisations to encourage the recycling of both used coffee cups and even coffee grounds.
Recycle your used coffee cups.
Most people will be aware of the nightmare surrounding the effective recycling of used paper and coffee cups. It’s been a nasty blight on our environment for far too long now.
The issue, for those who didn’t know, stems from the polyurethane that is hidden inside your paper coffee cup. This is the material that keeps your hot beverage hot and your hands cool. We’re not saying it’s an important material, but it also presents a headache for recycling facilities around the UK.
Most of these sites simply don’t possess the capability to separate the polyurethane from the paper, which means most coffee cups cannot be recycled.
Coinadrink, and of course its divisions including Café Casa, have teamed up with DS Smith to find a welcome breakthrough to the problem. Through their coffee cup drop box we are now actively promoting; you can effectively recycle your used paper coffee cups.
DS Smith offer an all-in-one service that represents a truly circular solution. The drop box can store up to 700 coffee cups, which will then be collected by DS Smith and taken to their paper mill in Kent. It is here that it is recycled into a new coffee cup drop box that can be reused for future use.
Since 2015, they have already managed to prevent 2.5 billion coffee cups going into landfill every year. Prior to this, just 0.25% were able to be properly recycled.

Recycle your used coffee grounds.
Think about how much you love coffee and just how much coffee you, your team or your customers/guests get through on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. A lot, we’re guessing.
But those used coffee grounds you’ve been throwing away can be put to good use. There’s long been stories of people doing just that, most notably using them as fertilisers in gardens for example. As a business, you can play your part, too with the help of First Mile.
We can put you in touch with First Mile to experience an all-in-one solution to recycling your used coffee grounds. They will deliver a tote box to your premises that can store up to 40 litres, before collecting and transporting it to their recycling facility in Cambridgeshire.
From here, the used coffee grounds get recycled into coffee logs and biomass pellets, both of which represent sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels.
Recycling used coffee grounds in this way prevents 80% of CO2 emissions going into landfill. One of these gases is methane, which is 28 times more dangerous than carbon dioxide.
